Democrats scored major victories in high-profile elections across the United States. In New York City, Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani made history as the first Muslim mayor of the nation’s largest city. In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill became the state’s first Democratic woman governor, while in Virginia, Democrat Abigail Spanberger made history as the first woman to be elected governor of that state.
