The partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) tied for the longest shutdown in U.S. history on March 28. DHS has been shut down for 43 days, which is the same number of days that the U.S. government was shut down in the fall of 2025. Republican and Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill have blamed each other for the standstill while tossing a dizzying array of proposals through the halls of Congress, which have not successfully moved forward.
