As a health editor, I get a lot of pitches in my inbox for products that promise to change my life. Creatine for muscle mass (so important for me as a woman in my late 30s), supplements for longevity and sports bras for better posture. While I’m always intrigued and often impressed by these inventions, there’s one I tried recently that completely blew my mind: The Brick.
Due to the nature of my job, I’m well aware of the many modern afflictions making us sick: not enough exercise and fiber and too much saturated fat and sitting, to name a few.
But I don’t think the amount of time we spend hunched over our phones gets enough attention. Studies show that people with higher “doomscrolling scores” experience more psychological distress and lower well-being, and excessive screen time is associated with lower self-esteem, increased mental health issues and even premature cognitive decline.
Plus, a large recent study found that each additional hour of screen time in bed (this includes scrolling and time spent on social media) was associated with significantly less sleep and a 59% higher risk of insomnia.
