Two Democratic Governors Considering a Run for President in 2028

WASHINGTON—A number of U.S. governors are indicating that they may seek the Democratic nomination for president in the 2028 general election. The 61st U.S. presidential election will be held on Nov. 7, 2028. President Donald Trump, having been elected in 2016 and 2024, is ineligible to seek another term per the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution. Historically, after a president’s second term, the opposition party has a greater chance of winning—as was the case in the elections of 2000, 2008, and 2016. A high-ranking statewide office, usually that of a governor or U.S. senator, is generally seen as a stepping stone to the presidency. Except for Trump, the last four presidents served in one of those offices, with President Joe Biden also serving as vice president.
