WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump awarded Mexican Border Defense Medals to 13 military service members who helped secure the southern border during a ceremony in the Oval Office on Dec. 15. “Today, we are here to honor our military men and women for their central role in the protection of our border,” Trump said while surrounded by honorees and administration officials. “We went from having millions of people pouring over our border to having none in the last eight months.” The bronze medal was first awarded in 1918 to honor the individuals who fought to protect the nation at the southern border in 1916 and 1917. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced in August that the Pentagon was bringing the award back to honor those currently serving at the border.
